The Honda Civic has long been a top player amongst small cars. Ever since its 1973 release, the Civic has won new customers, increased in size, and is now arguably the best compact mainstream model. Though the competition remains intense, the Honda Civic demonstrates that small does not just represent value, but beauty. Generation Eleven: Honda CivicThe 2022 Honda Civic launches this modelâs eleventh generation. It is a completely new vehicle with sedan and hatchback body styles available. Although only 1.4 inches longer than its immediate predecessor, the new Civic sedan seems as large as a midsize model. Honda offers the Civic sedan in LX ($22,915), Sport ($24,315), EX ($25,915), and Touring ($29,515) trims. The late-arriving hatchback comes in LX ($23,915), Sport ($25,115), EX-L ($27,615), and Sport Touring ($30,415) trims. These prices include the $1,015 destination charge. There is a lot to wade through with the 2022 Civic. Our test model was the Civic Touring sedan. Weâll cover the highlights before diving into our drive impressions. Highlights of the 2022 Honda CivicRelaxed DesignThe tenth-generation Civic shocked the senses with its provocative design. By far, it is the most stylish Civic built, but for the new model, Honda relaxed some of its design cues. The current model has a lower hood, the front roof pillars sit back slightly, the window treatments seem more elegant, and the rear loses much of its lighting drama. Although the new Civic tosses certain sporty elements, it trades that for a more polished, sophisticated look. Inside, the cabin offers a simple and clean design. Soft-touch materials abound. Where hard plastics are evident, they mesh well with the interior. The padding extends to the doors and the Civicâs controls are detailed and strong. In some models the switches feel weak and cheap. Not so with the Civic. Roomy InteriorNo midsize model seats five adults in comfort, although the Civic comes close. Its slightly larger size means more passenger space, but it is the side-by-side rear seating that makes it difficult to call this a true five-seater. Nevertheless, the rear seat offers decent head and legroom for adults; these are important attributes when shopping for a compact sedan. The rear seat folds down on all models, with a 60/40 split on some trims and a full bench on the LX and Sport models. Upwards of 14.8 cubic feet of trunk space means there is plenty of storage capacity available. Few sedans do it better. As for the hatchback, it will arrive later and bring with it excellent storage capacity. Improved TechAs you might guess, the tech features are improved this year, enabling the Civic to keep pace in the segment. Most trims come with a 7-inch touchscreen display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility. Choose the Touring trim and a 9-inch touchscreen display comes in. A four-speaker audio system is standard and an 8-speaker system makes it on the upper trims. Also available this year is a 12-speaker Bose audio system. Bluetooth and one USB port are standard. Among the upgrades are an additional USB port in the first row and two in the back. HD Radio, satellite radio, navigation, a 7-inch driver information display, and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster are available. Wireless Apple CarPlay is available, but the same cannot be said for Android Auto. A wireless charging pad can also be had. Strong Safety FeaturesThe march to expanded safety features continues across the industry. In some ways, the mainstream manufacturers are doing it better or at least they are not charging customers handsomely for every upgrade. The 2022 Civic is no exception. This year, every model comes with forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking. Lane departure warning, lane keep assist, road departure mitigation, and adaptive cruise control are standard. Further, automatic high-beam headlights, traffic sign recognition, and a rear seat reminder are included. There are a few spend-up driver-assist features available. These include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors. Powertrain ChoicesHonda equips the LX and Sport sedans with a naturally aspired four-cylinder engine. The 2.0-liter motor makes 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque. Power routes to the front wheels utilizing a continuously variable transmission. As equipped, the Civic earns as high as 31 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway for a combined 35 mpg. Move up to the EX and Touring trims and a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine takes over. This one develops 180 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. Power routes to the front wheels utilizing a CVT. This model is rated as high as 33 mpg city and 42 mpg on the highway for a combined 36 mpg. Why is there no manual transmission? Thatâs a good question, but as is common in this class, the sedan does not offer one. Choose the hatchback and a 6-speed gearbox is on the docket along with the CVT. Moreover, next year the Sporty Si and Type-R variants return and they will have manual transmissions as well. Driving ImpressionsThe standard Civics are no scream machines, but they offer a well-balanced ride. Indeed, the Civic is still small enough where understeer is not an issue. Credit the Civicâs designers for developing a car with communicative steering and agile handling to go with its exceptional ride. Our test Touring model with the turbo engine was our whip. We found It offers capable step-off acceleration with strong passing power. The turbo spools rather quickly and the CVT is decidedly not annoying. The CVT can operate in âmanualâ mode as it simulates seven forward gears. However, we left it alone as we went about our business. On the straightaway, the Civic performs as expected. The sedan feels planted, composed, and imbues confidence. But we prefer to leave the highways for the byways to put our vehicles through the paces. One of our favorite routes involves a fair share of twisty roads and curves. Here, the Civic showed its stuff. We did not have to fight with the steering wheel to maintain control. Also, the Civic stayed centered with relative ease. We found good power when flooring it between 45 mph and 65 mph. And when we slammed on the brakes, the Civic came to a sure stop with no brake fade detected. In all, the 2022 Civic proves its mettle. We canât wait for the Si and Type-R versions to gauge their performance chops. Competitive SetThe Honda Civic faces a dwindling number of competitors as the compact car segment continues to shrink. Gone are all the domestic contenders, leaving models from Japan, Germany, and Korea to do battle. The Toyota Corolla and Nissan Sentra are the Civicâs top rivals from a sales standpoint. But when it comes to all-around design and quality, the Mazda3 is it. Other challengers include the Volkswagen Jetta, Subaru Impreza, Hyundai Elantra, and the Kia Forte. Honda Civic Parting ThoughtsColor us impressed by everything Honda has done to simply make the 2022 Civic better. We consider it the cream of the class with the Mazda3 a close second. As disappointing as having no manual gearbox for the sedan was, the hatchback still offers one. Our personal choice is the hatchback with the upgraded engine and manual transmission. What are the similarities and differences between all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive? When you look at the names, AWD (all-wheel drive) and 4WD (four-wheel drive) cars seem to be the same. But the differences are simple and quite a bit obvious when you learn a thing or two about what they are. As explained briefly, an AWD vehicle can send power to all the wheels constantly and permanently, while a 4WD vehicle sends power to all the wheels (in this case 4 wheels) on demand. To make the difference more striking, instead of thinking about a car that has 4 wheels, think of a special kind of truck that has six wheels. An AWD 6-wheeled vehicle is usually a military truck that sends power to all six wheels permanently to improve traction. A 4WD 6-wheeled vehicle sends power to the four wheels in the back. This is most commonly used on semi-trucks in the US. It could also power only two wheels with an optional four on-demand, but its use is quite limited. AWD and 4WD DifferencesStill, the point still stands and it should make the difference between AWD and 4WD clearer. Further, 4WD cars use a transfer case that multiplies torque, unlike the AWD cars which use a center differential that doesnât multiply torque. Now the question is why are they different in the first place? Their building principle is quite different, AWD and 4WD having different internals as far as axles are concerned. In the AWD case, their common denominator is the usage of a center differential. The power exits out the transmission into this center differential, which has two outputs: one for the front wheels and another for the back wheels. These two outputs have their own differentials for each axle. Having such a setup allows the engine to send power at all the wheels while allowing said wheels to spin at different speeds when the car has to make a turn. Power to the WheelsThis center differential comes in many shapes and sizes, with the original being a regular old mechanical differential similar to the one found on the rear axle. Quattro models, such as the Audi RS4, use such a differential, usually anyway. Subaru, on the other hand, uses a viscous coupling, as found in the Subaru WRX STI. Such a coupling is somewhat similar to a torque converter, however, instead of using the fluidâs momentum to transfer torque it uses the fluidâs viscosity to do so. Nowadays, the most common way to give a car AWD is using an electronically controlled differential which uses clutches and many other intricate bits of engineering. This is the case with the Ford Focus RS, which can even work as a 2WD if necessary. Seeing how the power is permanently split between both axles, both axles receive a fraction of the engineâs power. Most commonly, the split is an even 50:50 in a straight line, meaning that half of the engineâs power goes to the front wheels and half to the back wheels. However, this can be quite different from car to car, having splits such as 70:30 or 40:60 on the straights, to splits of 80:20 while turning. Ford Focus RS. All-Wheel-Drive Traction AdvantageDynamically, the AWD system is nothing but stellar. Getting traction on all the wheels is the best way to make a car go fast due to quite a bit of fancy physics that happens around the tireâs contact patch. Not only that, but AWD cars also offer what is known as torque vectoring, which can break the wheel that loses traction and send more power to the other wheel which has plenty of traction. The result is fantastic handling, eliminating the understeer that plagues front-wheel-drive cars. However, while you get a potent car from a dynamic point of view, the system is complex and has many parts that could potentially fail. Not only that, but seeing how the system is permanent, there are two extra differentials compared to a 2WD car, so fuel economy is worse due to the extra friction produced by the differential. If Not All-Wheel Drive, Then Four-Wheel DriveIf weâre talking about 4WD cars, they donât possess a center differential that sends the power to both axles. The system works by using a transfer case, which is some kind of a small and weird gearbox. Itâs either placed at the end of the transmission or encased in the transmission. This transfer case allows the car to switch from a 2WD to a 4WD layout, however, this 4WD layout has quite a few caveats. (3) Some 4WD cars can be driven in AWD for a good while, like the Jeep Renegade which uses an engageable AWD system if you ever need the traction but generally working as an FWD car. However, most 4WD vehicles become 4WD by forcing a certain axle to spin at the exact same speed as the other axle. Commonly, by making the front one rotate at the same rate as the rear one. The front axle doesnât have a differential, so any turns will force the wheels to spin at different rates. If this happens on pavement, the transfer case and whole driveline will get damaged due to the extra stress and friction. If the car has a LOW option on the drive mode selector, then the transfer case also has a speed-reducing gear inside that increases the torque for climbing steep slopes, hauling heavy loads or for descending via engine braking(4). Most trucks and SUVs use such a layout, an example being the Toyota Tacoma. Efficient and ProductiveAll these system variables are used for a myriad of reasons. Being a 2WD car means that fuel economy is better while puttering around while having the option of getting the improved traction of all four wheels if you need them. References

Tesla considers electric vehicles to be the future. Toyota has gone heavily into electrification as part of its plan. Many manufacturers produce electric vehicles left, right, and center. But whatâs about them anyway? How do they even work? Why are they so interesting and considered to be the future? Well, letâs explain what an electric vehicle is. The Origin of Electric VehiclesElectric vehicles arenât anything new by any stretch of the imagination. The first electric vehicle appeared in 1881 and before Karl Benz patented the first-ever car in 1886. Their working principle is simple. You have a source of electricity (a battery, generally) which gives an electric motor all the power needed for it to spin. Technically, you could even use a regular fuel generator to power electric motors, and it would still be classified as an electric vehicle. As such, hybrid cars, PHEVs, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, cars powered by solar power, or wind can be classified as electric vehicles. However, weâre focusing on BEVs, or Battery Electric Vehicles because they are the ones you think about when you talk about Electric Vehicles. The Workings of Electric VehiclesA big question worth asking is how electric vehicles work, because you canât just run two wires from a battery to an electric motor and call it a day. Letâs start with the basics: They contain a battery pack. This pack is comprised of many batteries linked in parallel which are used to store the electricity the motors will use. These batteries use direct current. Simply put, the current flows through them at a constant rate in one direction. Think of a river flowing downstream, to get an idea of sorts. They use a converter that changes that direct current in alternating current, or a DC-AC converter. This is because high-power electric motors use high voltages and require a bit of oomph. Not only that, but cars use AC electric motors, and not smaller DC ones. Creating these high voltages in direct current is quite difficult. Indeed, it is so hard that it is easier to convert direct current into alternating current, while changing and increasing the voltage. PECU and an Electric MotorThey also use a PECU, a Powertrain Electronic Control Unit. Its job is like a regular carâs ECU. Based on what the driver wants and does, it changes the voltage and the frequency output by the DC-AC converter. By changing the voltage and frequency, the electric motor spins faster or slower. As such, this is also the reason why an electric car doesnât need a transmission. The transmissionâs job was also replaced by this PECU. Importantly, they need an electric motor. This motor transforms the electricity stored in the batteries and is transformed by the DC-AC converter into mechanical energy. In contrast, an internal combustion engine does the same thing, by transforming chemical energy found in fuel into mechanical energy. These electric motors can also be used as a generator, as such they can use the carâs inertia that also spins the wheels to stop itself and recharge the batteries in the process. Onboard Charger and DC-DC ConverterElectric vehicles also need an onboard charger. This is the fuel port, so to speak. In the fuel port, thereâs an outlet into which you can plug a charger, similarly to a mobile phone but on a much larger scale. This onboard charger transforms the household AC into DC so it can charge the batteries. AC is like a seaâs waves. It comes a bit and goes away, but by doing so you ever so slightly keep getting your feet wet. Thereâs also a DC-DC converter. Thatâs because the batteries themselves store large voltages, much higher than what the wipers use or what the infotainment system uses. Your devices also use the same voltage as those, so thereâs an additional converter that changes the batteriesâ voltage to a smaller more manageable one for tinier applications. Thermal and Battery ManagementThe batteries get quite hot or quite cold. As such, the EV also needs a thermal management system. While the PECU controls the motors and the drivetrain, the body control module (BCU) controls the features inside the car, such as power windows, locking and unlocking, and other similar bits and bobs. Thereâs also an important battery management system (BMS) that controls and monitors the batteries. It manages how the batteries charge and communicates with the PECU and other sensors so those know how to best use the batteries. (1) Electric Vehicle Power SourceThatâs the gist of it, at least for the most part. Now thereâs the second important question: well, they use electricity but where does that electricity even come from? Electricity nowadays comes from many fields, but they are split across like this: burning fossil fuels, solar panels, windmills, hydropower, nuclear power, natural gas burning, oils, and biofuels. Worldwide, around 25-percent or so of the generated electricity comes from âgreenâ sources. Nuclear electricity is uncertain, due to us not being very sure what comes along with the radioactive waste. Still, electricity is electricity. Where is it stored? Well, in the batteries. (2) Types of BatteriesBatteries use a bunch of reversible chemical reactions. That is, a compound can be broken down to produce electricity, and the broken-down compound can be restored with electricity to its former state. This reversibility isnât endless, and those compounds wonât be able to ârepairâ themselves due to a variety of reasons. There are many types of batteries out there, which explained briefly are: Lead-Acid BatteriesThese use lead plates as a negative terminal and lead oxide as a positive terminal. They are sunken in a sulfuric acid mixture. The reaction between the two generates a voltage of 2.05 volts per cell, and each car battery has 6 cells, generating those 12 volts. They were used for cars back in the old days or small carts as a battery for an electric motor. Nowadays, they are used on regular cars to power accessories and to start the car. Nickel-Metal Hydride BatteriesThese utilize nickel and an alloy that absorbs hydrogen and transforms it into heat. They react with nickel oxide hydroxide to produce 1.2 volts per cell. They are quite light when looking at how much power they generate for the weight. Compared to lead-acid, they are at least twice as electricity dense as a lead-acid battery. They were first used in the initial Toyota RAV4 EV. Nickel-Cadmium BatteriesThey are very similar to nickel-metal hydride batteries, because they use the same principle of use. However, they are overall more toxic than the newer alternative, so they were phased out for the most part. Lithium-ion and Lithium-Polymer BatteriesThese are the batteries used nowadays. They have lower specific power than nickel-metal hydride batteries but have three times the energy density. They are also less finicky to use and have a longer lifespan. However, they are quite prone to catch on fire if burst and they heavily dislike cold weather. Cold weather makes them discharge quite a bit faster, hence that thermal management system we talked about before. Solid-State BatteriesThey are believed to be able to have even higher energy densities, up to 2.5 times as much compared to Lithium-ion. Some brands want to start manufacturing them. Prototypes exist, but they arenât particularly durable. At least not yet anyway. (3) A Matter of CurrentsAs far as how these are all linked, it all goes as follows: you charge the car using that onboard charger. Said electricity goes to the battery pack. From there, when you drive the car, the electricity flows from the battery to the DC-AC converter and to the DC-DC converter, to be used by the motors or small bits and bobs, respectively. This flow is controlled by the BMS and PECU. This is, briefly, how a basic battery electric vehicle works and operates. Now you may wonder about more explicit facts, such as how is it built differently than a regular ICE vehicle? Itâs still a car, correct? Yes, but technically no. A regular ICE car has some constraints which need to be considered. There must be room for the engine, at least somewhere. There must also be room for a transmissionâ¦again, somewhere. Sure, thereâs a transmission, but is my car front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive? If itâs all-wheel drive, I will also need a center differential or a transfer case. An electric car also has similar questions but with different components. The biggest component, and the heaviest, is the battery pack. It must be placed strategically, to not alter the carâs center of mass too much or it will affect the carâs dynamics, and neither weirdly placed to not risk it burst in case of a crash. So, the best course of action would be to create the whole chassis and underside with battery storage in mind. EV DrivetrainThereâs the problem if I make it rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Front-wheel-drive electric cars arenât all that great, because under heavy acceleration due to high power and hefty weight they will understeer quite a lot. If their electric motors are on the smaller side and quite mellow, then a front-wheel-drive format is fine. Still, it begs the question of where to place the motor or motors. If you use a single motor in a rear-wheel-drive layout, you will need a rear differential. If you use two motors in the back for a rear-wheel-drive format, like a Tesla, then thereâs no need for a differential so thereâs more room for batteries or a larger trunk. Speaking of the trunk, should you make the front trunk small to improve visibility, or make it bigger for transportation or for a very important crumple zone? The front trunk, or lack thereof, can also be altered to factor in aerodynamics to a greater extent. There are many other caveats that manufacturers must consider now, which they havenât done before. Transmitting PowerFor instance, why does the EV have a gear stick with Drive, Park, and Reverse? Does the EV have a transmission? If you only use a single motor, then that differential is the single-speed transmission, because thatâs the final drive in a regular car. No extra transmission is required, because as stated above, the DC-AC converter acts like an automatic transmission. If the EV uses two electric motors for the rear wheels, then there isnât even a transmission, so the car is gearless. This is done because the DC-AC converter can make it so the electric motor spins quite slowly with a bunch of torque by changing the voltage and the frequency of the AC. They use that gear stick to keep it familiar to the user. You would still need a way to make your car travel in reverse, so keeping the gear stick practice is preferred. Do electric cars turn any different compared to regular ICE cars? Well, no. Thereâs still the same old steering rack that regular cars use. Even if the car is front-wheel drive and uses a differential, the same principle applies. If ICE cars can be front-wheel drive with an engine in the front, transmission, and a differential, then electric cars have plenty of room to have a steering rack too. The Electrics v. ICEDo electric motors feel any different compared to regular internal combustion engines? Indeed, by quite a bit. Electric motors have a lot more torque from a standstill, so they feel quite a bit peppier. They also start to fizzle out at higher speeds due to the engineâs RPM limit, like a regular old engine. Thus, this limit is more apparent due to the lack of an actual transmission. If the car would have a three-gear transmission, its top speed would be much higher. With the new Grand Cherokee in the mix, Jeep solidifies its leadership in a competitive market. Introducing the 2022 Grand CherokeeJeep debuted the all-new Grand Cherokee on Facebook Live this morning. The 15-minute preview covered all the salient points about the new model, including the Grand Cherokee 4xe variant that brings electrification to the product line. Jeep says the new model will go on sale late this year in the U.S. and 2022 in overseas markets. Those markets include Chile, Australia, Japan, and Korea. The new Grand Cherokee moves to an all-new architecture it shares with the Grand Cherokee L. The latter represents an extended wheelbase version of the former. Notably, Jeepâs ascendancy coincides with the brandâs 80th anniversary this year. Among the highlights of the latest model are the following:Redesigned ExteriorAmong the exterior changes are a wider and larger seven-slat grille, a lowered, tapered roof, and a more muscular hood. Other changes include new active grille shutters, front wheel spats, air curtains, a hood aero flick, and new rear vertical-pillar spoilers. For the first time, a gloss black roof is available on the Overland trim. Moreover, it is standard with the Trailhawk, Summit, and Summit Reserve. All-New InteriorJust as the exterior is new, the interior gets customized changes. Jeep claims the seating architecture is improved, particularly for the front passengers. This includes a length adjustable cushion for the front seats and new 16-way power-adjustable seats with lumbar support. Massaging capabilities are now added to the top-trim models. Jeep also reworked the center console to update switches as well to supply additional storage space. That space is now large enough to accommodate a pair of wireless devices and includes a wireless charger. Expanded PowertrainsReturning with the new model are two gas engines. These are the 3.6-liter V6 and the 5.7-liter V8. The V6 makes 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, while the V8 bangs out 357 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. Both engines work with an 8-speed automatic transmission. New this year is a 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It is exclusive to the 4xe model and works in tandem with an electric motor. Under peak power or full throttle, this combination delivers 470 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque. Again, power routes to all four wheels utilizing an 8-speed automatic transmission. Jeep estimates the new 4xe plug-in hybrid electric vehicle offers 25 miles of all-electric range. Upgraded CapabilitiesJeep put the 4xe model through the paces, including on the legendary Rubicon Trail. Operating in full-electric mode, the 4xe completed its challenge. New for 2022 is a sway-bar disconnect feature that works with a touch of a switch inside the cabin. When disconnected, this class-exclusive feature supplies improved articulation and traction while traversing rough terrain and when climbing rocks. As before, Jeep offers customers a choice of three four-by-four systems, depending on the trim. Expanded Technologies; Latest Safety FeaturesBeginning this year, the Grand Cherokee gains Stellantisâ Uconnect 5 interface, the most advanced version of this heralded system. It includes an available front passenger screen. Also new for 2022 is Active Driving Assist and the latest rear-entertainment system with improved high definition. On the safety front, Jeep includes the Active Driving Assist technology with hands-on automated driving. Notably, it serves as the precursor to greater autonomous capabilities the brand has planned. Further, a 360-degree surround-view and night camera system is also new. Expanded Interior CapacityComing in nearly the same size as the most recent Grand Cherokee, the new model features 144.6 cubic feet of total interior passenger volume. Earlier this year, the two formed a joint venture, BlueOvalSK, to advance Fordâs initiative into all things electric. Three new BlueOvalSK battery plants are planned (the third is in Tennessee). The plants will support the upcoming electric F-150 pickup truck as well as future Ford and Lincoln EV products. âThis is our moment â our biggest investment ever â to help build a better future for America,â said Jim Farley, Ford president and CEO. âWe are moving now to deliver breakthrough electric vehicles for the many rather than the few. Itâs about creating good jobs that support American families, an ultra-efficient, carbon-neutral manufacturing system, and a growing business that delivers value for communities, dealers and shareholders.â Blue Oval CityThe Tennessee mega campus, dubbed Blue Oval City, will occupy 3,600 acres outside of Memphis and include the Tennessee battery plant. Notably, thatâs approximately six square miles dedicated to helping bring the EV F-150 to the market. Ford says that the Blue Oval City will support approximately 6,000 new jobs and advance a carbon-neutral design. Moreover, Ford says the plant will minimize landfill waste and make zero freshwater withdrawals for manufacturing processes. Indeed, Ford plans to accomplish that feat by treating and recycling water on site. In another effort to burnish its green credentials. Ford will work with Redwood Materials to recycle batteries at the end of their lifespan. In particular, Redwood will ensure that spent lithium-ion batteries are repurposed. Kentucky Battery PlantsAs for the Kentucky portion of the plan, Ford will build twin co-located plants capable of producing up to 43 gigawatt-hours each for a total of 86 gigawatt-hours annually. Some 5,000 jobs are planned for Kentuckyâs BlueOval SK Battery Park. âWe thank Ford Motor Company and SK Innovation for their investment in Team Kentucky,â said Kentucky Gov. The Tundra is this brandâs full-size pickup truck and we had not seen a new one since 2007. A 2014 refresh and a few other changes during the intervening years helped sales remain steady, but a new model was warranted. After all, each of the domestics made changes at least twice during that time frame and even the slower selling Nissan Titan was overhauled in recent years. There are copious amounts of data to parse about the new Tundra. Further, we will have a chance to drive several copies at a press preview in October, followed by a weekâs worth of testing in North Carolina at some point after that. The new Tundra offers a more modern look and is improved across the board. We think it will be better positioned to take on the competition. Namely, the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, and the Nissan Titan. Highlights of the 2022 Toyota TundraThere is nothing carried forward from the previous Tundra. The model shares a new platform with the Land Cruiser. It features a fully boxed ladder-frame design that is available in two wheelbase lengths. While there is no Regular Cab, the Double Cab model with rear-pivoting second-row half doors and the full four-door CrewMax return. One of the differences for 2022 involves bed sizes. The Double Cab once again offers 6.5- or 8.1-foot beds. For the first time, the CrewMax gains a second bed size â 6.5 feet â to go with the standard 5.5-foot bed. As before, the Tundra seats five or six, depending on how it is configured. Tundra Style PointsWe have read the comments and understand that the 2022 Toyota Tundra offers a love-it-or-hate-it look to some. We wonât call the look polarizing, although that is exactly what some of our fellow journalists are saying. A clear departure from the past is an apt descriptor and that leaves the styling interpretation open to individual scrutiny and comment. What the Tundra does is go bold as in, âgo bold or go home.â That repetition is wholly evident with the front fascia as the gaping maw simply gapes much more. Indeed, by blacking out a portion of the front bumper, the look simply overwhelms the front end. Even so, that push intentionally places the Tundra within the style direction of all large trucks. Yes, there are variations in grille design, depending on the trim. You will also find T-shaped headlamps, C-shaped taillamps, and stamped fenders. Carefully placed profile sculpting, a kicked-up beltline (especially apparent on the Double Cab), and bodacious wheel wells are other features of note. Inside, the cabin is as massive as ever. And that is exactly what is expected in this segment. The look is modern, but not futuristic, with clean lines, generous amounts of soft-touch materials, and a thoroughly redesigned (some may say reimagined) console. Thickly padded and supportive seats all around ensure that there is not a single penalty box present. Speaking of seats, the nickel-metal hydride battery pack in the hybrid sits beneath the rear seat in the i-FORCE Max models. Driver Assist TechnologyWith the Tundra, Toyota has long been a leader in driver-assist technology. That continues this year as every trim comes with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 package. This package contains a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection. Other features include automatic high beams, lane departure alert, radar cruise control, and a rear-seat reminder. Beyond the TSS system, Toyota supplies blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert on each trim. Also available is parking support brake to aid in stopping the vehicle when sensors detect a stationary object. Updated TechToyota equips the Tundra with a standard 8-inch touchscreen display, up from seven inches last year. For 2022, Toyota offers an available 14-inch touchscreen display with improved screen resolutions. As is common these days, the Tundraâs standard instrument panel layout includes readouts and a small digital display. But the industry is moving to fully digital instrument panels, therefore Toyota is obliging with an optional 12.3-inch display. We are eager to put the Tundraâs new multimedia scheme to the test. The previous system was old and awkward. On paper, the new one appears to resolve these problems. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration and over-the-air updates are among the features present. New Standard EngineA V8 engine has long-powered Toyotaâs largest pickup truck. That made sense as the brandâs emphasis has always been on winning customers from Ford, GM, and Chrysler (now Stellantis). Full-size pickup truck shoppers expect outsized payload, towing, and performance, something that is inherent to V8 motors. This year, though, is different as Toyota retired the previous 5.7-liter V8 from Tundra service. In its place is a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 i-FORCE engine, nearly identical in size to Fordâs first and most popular EcoBoost engine. This engine makes 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, whereas the previous V8 engine delivers 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. Notably, power routes to the wheels utilizing a 10-speed automatic transmission. Optional Hybrid SystemWhen the second-generation Tundra rolled out, it offered three engine choices: a 4.0-liter V6, a 4.7-liter V8, and the 5.7-liter V8. Along the way, the smaller V8 was swapped out for a 4.6-liter engine. After 2014, the V6 disappeared. Beginning in 2020, only one engine choice remained. This put Toyota at a distinct disadvantage in a segment where its chief competitors offered three, four, even five choices. One of those choices is a turbodiesel, something Toyota did not offer and wonât make available with the new truck. For 2022, Toyota returns to a two-engine format, with the second choice based on the standard engine. Specifically, the second choice adds a hybrid drivetrain, but not in the usual layout as found in other hybrids such as the Prius. Here, Toyota sticks the electric motor directly into the bell housing between the engine and the transmission. Thus, the electric motor is designed to work closely with the powertrain. Specifically, the electric motor works with the gas engine at low speeds before the engine takes over at 18 mph to maximize performance. As a result, this second choice â known as the i-FORCE MAX â produces 437 horsepower and 589 pound-feet of torque. We have no idea how much efficiency this powertrain imparts as the emphasis here is on power, not fuel savings. Payload and TowingAnother area where the 2022 Tundra sees improvement is in payload and towing. Here, the maximum payload capacity achieves a robust 1,940 pounds. As for towing, the top rating reaches 12,000 pounds when the truck is properly equipped. All in all, these improvements place the Tundra in the thick of it all. Parting ThoughtsFifteen years between models is a long time. In the 2022 Tundra, Toyota takes its full-size pickup truck to the heart of the segment, intending to win converts from the domestics as well as to bolster its fan base. Toyota, though, does not have the build capacity to match its chief rivals, but it certainly intends to maximize production. Lastly, as for pricing, those details come later. Volkswagen has a new crossover and it occupies the entry-level position once held by the VW Tiguan. The 2022 Volkswagen Taos is the latest utility vehicle from this German brand, a subcompact model with room for five. The VW Taos slots beneath the Tiguan and is followed by the Volkswagen Atlas Sport and Atlas. Add in the electric ID.4 and Volkswagen has five utility vehicles for consideration. SUVs remain the fastest-growing automotive segment, therefore Volkswagen is poised to win over new customers with its broad and varied offerings. The 2022 Volkswagen Taos comes in S ($22,995/$25,040); SE ($27,245/$28,695); and SEL ($31,490/$33,045) trims. The first set of prices are for the front-wheel-drive models, the second prices cover all-wheel drive. Add $1,195 for the destination charge. Highlights of the 2022 Volkswagen TaosCertainly, as an all-new model, there is much to digest about the 2022 Taos. For starters, this model rides on Volkswagen’s modular MQB platform. The new architecture allows Volkswagen to standardize the location of pedals and most engine-bay dimensions. In brief, the cross-utilization allows this automaker to share rough layouts, ensure uniform safety across its model line, and save money. Hopefully, at least some of those savings are passed on to customers. Familiar StylingThere is something inherently familiar with the Volkswagen Taos. That quickly becomes known when comparing it with other VW models, especially the Atlas. Specifically, Volkswagen took several Atlas design elements and applied them to the Taos. These include the wide grille, fascia chin, wheel wells, beltline design, and liftgate layout of the midsize model. Notably, the Taos can also pass for a smaller version of the compact Tiguan. Where the original Tiguan was the smallest of compact crossovers when it rolled out in 2009, the Taos is the largest subcompact crossover. Moreover, its dimensions are larger than the original Tiguan, thus it is sized well for the segment. The list of standard features includes LED reflector headlights with LED daytime running lights. The SEL trim comes with projector lights. Automatic headlights, LED taillights, roof rails, power-adjustable side mirrors, and 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels are included. Among the upgrades are rain-sensing wipers, heated side mirrors, and a panoramic sunroof ($1,200). Some models come with 18- or 19-inch wheel choices, including black ($395) and machined alloy. Heated front washer nozzles are also available. Roomy InteriorWith a wheelbase just four inches shorter than the Tiguan, the Taos delivers exceptional room for a small crossover. Five can sit in a pinch, although four is ideal. We have sat in competing models where the rear seat is tight for adults and is best suited for children. At least the Taos can claim room for four adults. There is nothing spectacular about the Taos’ cabin, at least from a styling standpoint. However, it is not utilitarian boring as it makes use of notches and curves across the dashboard. A combination of soft-touch materials, brightwork trim, and hard plastics are utilized. As for fit and finish, we give the Taos high marks. We found the front seats mostly comfortable, although, like other small crossovers, a few additional inches of thigh support would be ideal. A 60/40 split fold-down rear bench seat occupies the second row. The Taos comes with 28.1 cubic feet of standard cargo space or a whopping 66.3 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. All Taos trims feature push-button start. Full power accessories, air conditioning, cloth seats, and a manual driver’s seat are included. Move up through the trim levels and remote start is present. Other available features include upgraded cloth or leather seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support, heated front seats, and ventilated front seats. Dual-zone climate control is available. Safety FeaturesDriver assistance technology is a big deal these days and the Volkswagen Taos has what customers want. Bundled under the IQ Drive S Package ($995 with the S, $895 with the SE, and included with the SEL), these features build on an automatic post-collision braking system that comes standard. The package comprises forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and blind-spot monitoring. Lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control with full stop and go, and emergency assist is part of the package. Yes, you will pay extra for these features on the S and SE. However, we think that this is the one package upgrade worth taking. Technology FeaturesOn the tech front, the Taos comes with a 6.5-inch display, four speakers, HD Radio, two USB ports, Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Also available is an 8-inch touch-screen display, six speakers, navigation, two rear USB ports, wireless device charging, and an 8-speaker audio system. One of the more intriguing features is the Taos’ standard and customizable digital instrument panel. The S and SE trims come with an 8-inch display, while the SEL has a 10.25-inch display that’s fully configurable. You might miss the standard displays at first, but the panel offers clear and crisp readouts that seem as if they belong on a far pricier vehicle. New PowertrainVolkswagen supplies the Taos with one engine choice, a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. This one makes 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It works with an 8-speed automatic transmission in front-wheel-drive models. A 7-speed dual-clutch transmission sends power to all four wheels with all-wheel drive. A cursory inspection of what competing models offer shows the Taos is the middle of the pack. That said, we found the Taos offers capable straight-line acceleration and fair passing power. An “S” drive mode on all models holds gears long, but only the all-wheel-drive models feature a selectable drive mode. Moreover, the Volkswagen swaps out the rear torsion beam for a multi-link rear suspension for the all-wheel-drive model. We found the Taos AWD delivers decent stability and control while turning. The ride is also comfortable. The default steering mode is light, if not especially involved. But with the drive mode selector, more engaging driving thanks to increased steering weight becomes possible. In other words, you might not need all-wheel drive where you live. But if you prefer a better driving experience, then it is worth considering. Competitive SetThe number of Volkswagen Taos competitors easily exceeds one dozen models. Most come with standard front-wheel drive, although models such as the Nissan Kicks and the Toyota CH-R are front-wheel-drive-only. The Subaru Crosstrek is the lone competitor with standard all-wheel drive. Customers should also cross-shop the all-new Toyota Corolla Cross as well as the Ford EcoSport and the Chevrolet Trax. The Ford Escape, Ford Bronco Sport, Kia Seltos, Jeep Compass, Mazda CX-3, and Mazda CX-30 are other models to consider. Finally, the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, Hyundai Kona, and the Nissan Rogue Sport are worth a look. Our RecommendationIt is “mission accomplished” with the Volkswagen Taos. This small SUV does everything it needs to do to supply a gateway to the VW brand. You can still shop the Golf if a small VW car model is to your liking, but when it comes to crossovers, the Taos supplies a compelling entry point. Some more good news about the Taos is that there isn’t a poorly equipped model to be had. We can see people starting their search with the S and adding the safety package and be done with it. GM is aggressively attempting to quell the fallout from its Chevrolet Bolt EV fiasco. The Bolt is GMâs first fully dedicated electric vehicle and was supposed to serve as a transition from the Chevrolet Volt PHEV to more advanced models, such as the upcoming GMC Hummer EV and the Cadillac Lyriq. Unfortunately, the automaker has a bit of a PR mess on its hands. Indeed, the company must recall every single Bolt built since its 2017 inception, representing roughly 142,000 vehicles. As reported by us last week, the Bolt is a fire hazard and may suddenly erupt into flames. As a result, GM advised owners to park their cars away from their homes and other vehicles until a remedy is offered. The company is working with its Korean battery supplier LG Chem to identify the problem and offer a solution. Solution: Comprehensive Action PlanThis week, GM announced that it has developed a âcomprehensive action planâ so that customers âcan safely and confidently drive, charge, and park the Chevy Bolt EV and EUV. GM says the solution involves both hardware and software countermeasures, including some that are already in practice. âWeâre grateful for the patience of owners and dealers as we work to advance solutions to this recall,â said Doug Parks, GM executive vice president, Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain. âResuming battery module production is a first step and weâll continue to work aggressively with LG to obtain additional battery supply. In addition, weâre optimistic a new advanced diagnostic software will provide more convenience for our customers.â New Cells ComingLG manufacturing plants in Michigan and the Netherlands have resumed production and the supplier has committed to providing more cells to GM to expedite repairs. By mid-October, dealers will begin receiving replacement battery modules to make repairs. GM has identified a pair of manufacturing defects known as a torn anode and a folded separator, both of which must be present in the same battery cell. Although a rare occurrence, the potential for a fire is possible, thus the recall. The automaker says LG has put in place new manufacturing processes and has been working with GM to analyze and intensify its quality assurance programs in a bid to supply confidence in its batteries henceforth. Prioritizing Repairs and a Software DeadlineCustomer repairs will be prioritized depending on those whose batteries were manufactured during specific build timeframes where GM believes battery defects appear to be clustered. A notification process is in place that will advise involved customers when their replacement modules will be available. Further, GM says the new batteries will be covered by a limited warranty of 8 years or 100,000-miles, whichever comes first. GM has also set a 60-day deadline to release a new advanced diagnostic software package. The company says that the package âwill increase the available battery charging parameters over existing guidance.â Specifically, the diagnostic software will look for and detect particular abnormalities that could point to a damaged battery. If a problem is detected, the customer will be alerted and given a priority to have damaged battery modules replaced. Further, with the software in place, GM intends to permit customers to reach a 100-percent charge level post-diagnosis once again. At present, the automaker is limiting full charges to 90 percent. The software requires dealer installation. GM also outlined updated instructions regarding the parking of the Bolt. Customers may park wherever they choose, while still allowing ample space around their vehicles. This is possible provided customers limit their charge levels to 90 percent. They must also charge their vehicles more frequently, and avoid allowing the range to fall below 70 miles. Lastly, once the Chevrolet Bolt is fully charged, it should be left outside. The company is urging Bolt owners to not leave their vehicles charging indoors overnight. Looking AheadIt will take many months before all Bolt owners have their cars serviced and repaired. The wait is certainly anxiety-inducing, but at least a fix is in place. Some owners, however, may want GM to buy back their cars. Likely, that is something that will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Finally, with in-house Ultium batteries powering all upcoming GM electric vehicles, the automaker must help consumers understand the distinction. For instance, the two battery systems are unrelated. The last thing the automaker wants is customers who are too spooked to buy electric. Especially with tens of billions of dollars allocated to make the transition to full electric underway. It has been a long time coming, but finally, it is here: a new Nissan Frontier pickup truck. This vehicle launches the Frontierâs third generation, although it shares the previous modelâs frame. Bold styling, an advanced powertrain, and updated technologies set this model apart with considerable improvement made elsewhere. The COVID-19 pandemic thew a monkey wrench into Nissanâs plans to release the third-generation Frontier in the 2021 model year. Instead, the second-generation model continued for a seventeenth year while Nissan made plans for an early 2022 release. As before, the Nissan Frontier is available in extended two-door (King Cab) and four-door (Crew Cab) body styles. The King Cab has a six-foot bed, while the Crew Cab comes with either a five-or six-foot bed. All models have a naturally aspirated V6 engine and an automatic transmission. Sadly, the manual gearbox is no longer available. Customers have a choice of rear- or four-wheel drive. Nissan offers the King Cab in S ($27,840) and SV ($30,540) trims. Meanwhile, the Crew Cab can be had in S ($29,340), SV ($32,140), Long Bed SV ($34,040), and PRO-4X ($34,240) trims. Not included in our pricing is a $1,150 freight charge. Choosing four-wheel drive adds $3,200 to the extended cab and $3,000 to the four-door crew cab. Highlights of the 2022 Nissan FrontierStep by step and bit by bit we break down the 2022 Frontier. You wouldnât know it, but Nissan kept the previous modelâs ladder frame and strengthened it. We wonât quibble and call this model a carryover as new suspension bits offer further separation. The sheet metal is new and this truck is five inches longer from bumper to bumper. Rugged StylingThe 2022 Frontier offers a more chiseled and modern expression than before. Indeed, it advances a huge leap in styling with its rugged appearance, highlighted by a broad grille with modern LED accent lighting. A high beltline, chunky wheel wells, and LED rear lighting are other features of note. Halogen headlights are standard, while LED lights are available. LED daytime running lights and halogen or LED fog lamps are optional. Truck bed lighting is included. Power folding side mirrors with an available heating feature can be had. Various bumper claddings, bed-rail protectors, tie-down hooks, and a locking tailgate with a spoiler can be had. A multi-track system with four tie-down cleats is available. The standard 16-inch wheels are wrapped within all-season tires. Also available are 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheel choices. All-season and all-terrain options are available. Modern InteriorIf you are familiar with the Frontier, then you may realize just how out-of-date its cabin was. Fortunately, the operative word here is the âwasâ as the new model is greatly improved. That is not surprising, but it is a most welcome change. The interior loses none of its truckish persona. Instead, it updates the look with a thoroughly modern design. The front-facing dashboard layout remains, but features ample layering, and distinct separation between the instrument panel, center console, and glovebox. A handy device holder sits above the console. At the base of the console is an available wireless charging pad. The rest of the truck features improved storage pockets and cup holders, and a fold-up rear seat with the Crew Cab. Choose the King Cab and a pair of jump seats mark the rear. Thatâs in contrast to the 60/40 split fold-up rear seat in the Crew Cab. Thus, the King Cab seats four and the Crew Cab seats five. In any case, both styles feature comfortable and supportive front bucket seats. We found ample head, shoulder, leg, and hip support at the ready. The King Cab comes with either standard or premium cloth choices. With the Crew Cab, the upholstery improves as you advance through the trim walk. Namely, embroidered premium cloth with available imitation leather trim and real hides can be had. Depending on the trim, a manual-controlled driverâs seat gives way to 8-way power-controlled and 2-way lumbar seats. In all trims, the front passenger seat is manually operated. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are available; sorry as there is no seat ventilation option. Full power accessories are included. Among the upgrades are dual-zone climate control, an automatic tilt-and-slide sunroof with a manual sunshade, and upgraded door trim. Safety FeaturesNissan makes its 360 Safety Shield package available on every trim. Bundled under a Technology Package ($990), the upgrades include high beam assist, adaptive cruise control, and rear automatic braking. Also, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and a rear sonar system are included. It is a worthwhile upgrade on the trims that charge extra for it. Included with all trims is automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Also, forward collision warning is standard. Technology FeaturesNissan equips the 2022 Frontier comes with either a standard 8-inch touchscreen display or an available 9-inch display. Two USB ports are included, four are available. This truck features Siri Eyes Free, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, and a six-speaker audio system. The instrument panel has a 7-inch color display. Among the upgrades are a 10-speaker Fender audio system, a wireless charging pad, and two 110-volt outlets: the first one is found in the cabin, the second one is in the bed. Potent PowertrainWhat was supposed to be a one-year preview of the next-generation Frontierâs powertrain became two. In a highly unusual move, Nissan introduced the third-generation truckâs powertrain to close out the second-generation model. We had the opportunity to put that model through the paces and liked what we found. Under the hood of every 2022 Frontier is a 3.8-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine. This one develops 310 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque. Unlike the previous model and not in keeping with what most of its competitors do, Nissan didnât bother with a base four-cylinder engine. This move might cost Nissan some sales, but we think once people drive the V6, theyâll be won over. Further, Nissan pairs this engine with a clean-shifting 9-speed automatic transmission. Among the advantages of the new powertrain combination is its raw power. The engine makes its presence known with a whoosh upon ignition and a rumble under full throttle. We didnât check its 0-60 mph time, but this truck moves quickly and with authority. Speed concerns may not be one of the top attributes preferred by owners, but the added performance is certainly welcome when present. On the highway, the Frontier picks up speed steadily and has copious amounts of passing power at the ready. The transmission is ideally suited for this truck as it doles out clean shifts. Ample low- and mid-range grunt make this engine a star in our book. Pro-4X TrimStrong brakes bring this truck to a stop with no fade detected. Direct steering and superior handling are other attributes of note. The latter remains especially competent even when equipped with the all-terrain tires on our Pro-4X trim. Speaking of the Pro-4X model, this is the one that does everything to optimize the Frontierâs off-road prowess. Specifically, it comes with off-road tires, skid plates, and special shock absorbers. With 9.8 inches of ground clearance and an electronically locking rear differential are other features of note. We didnât put it through the paces that top Jeep and Toyota models travel, but the Pro-4X is designed for the rigors of the toughest trails. Other notable Frontier features include a 6,720-pound towing capacity when properly equipped. As for payload, it comes in at 1,610 pounds. Finally, to the surprise of no one, fuel efficiency is not this modelâs strong suit. Indeed, with an EPA rating of 18 mpg in the city, 24 mpg on the highway, and 20 mpg combined, the rear-wheel-drive model is anything but efficient. Choose the four-wheel drive and those numbers fall to 17/22/19 mpg city/highway/combined. Competitive SetNissan also sells the full-size Titan and Titan XD, but the Frontier has always been this brandâs best-selling truck. Indeed, the Frontier is typically the second best-seller in the segment, following on the heels of the Toyota Tacoma. Other models in this segment include the GM twins: Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. The Jeep Gladiator, Ford Ranger, and Honda Ridgeline are three others to consider. Notably, the Jeep has standard four-wheel drive, the Ford comes in rear- or four-wheel drive, while the Honda is all-wheel-drive-only. Our RecommendationWe recommend the Crew Cab over the King Cab, unless you will never need to carry more than two people in your truck. Further, start your search with the SV trim as thatâs where various package upgrades become available. We think the sweet spot for this model is somewhere between $35,000 and $40,000, which depends on the packages and drivetrain selected. Thatâs within the range of other trucks in this segment too. All in all, we are satisfied with what Nissan did to give us a fresh Frontier model. It is a much more competitive beast than before and comes to the market only slightly more expensive than the model it replaced. That said, it is easy to get carried away and build a truck that approaches $50,000. At that cost, you are well within Titan territory.
